cotton cellulose was treated with 1 and 3 m sodium hydroxide at 170-190 $degree$ c and the resulting mixtures were investigated by capillary gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. up to 65 products were identified including mainly straight-chain and branched-chain hydroxy monocarboxylic acids and dicarboxylic acids, of which lactic, glycolic, 3-deoxyhexaric acids were the main compounds. utilization possibilities of the acid mixtures are briefly discussed.
