first used as an engineering material over a hundred years ago, natural rubber still offers the designer a unique set of properties and characteristics. synthetic formulations now available make rubber an ideal material for many military and civil applications the term 'rubber' encompasses an extremely wide range of materials, all of which are polymers exhibiting elastic properties - hence the generic term 'elastomer'.
