the specific component of cotton dust that is the cause of byssinosis has not yet been determined. bract fragments are a large component in cotton dust, and this paper is concerned with one of the classes of compounds that occur in cotton bracts. bracts of cotton plants (gossypium hirsutum) of three varieties grown in three states were extracted with 70 acetone. the condensed tannins in the extracts and in extracted and unextracted bracts were hydrolyzed in butanolic hcl, and the types and levels of anthocyanidins produced were compared by thin-layer chromatography and spectroscopy. the area of growth had more of an effect than did the variety on levels of anthocyanidins obtained.
