fenvalerate has two chiral centers. technical-grade fenvalerate consists of equal portions of the four stereoisomers. it is 10-20 times more potent than conventional insecticides such as organic phosphates and carbamates. because only a $alpha$ fenvalerate is bioactive, its activity is four times greater than current technical-grade fenvalerate. the author has also discovered a number of useful synthetic pathways leading to a $alpha$ fenvalerate. some of these are under development because they have become increasingly important to industry. fenvalerate shows particularly high insecticidal activity against major pest insects or larvae of the lepidoptera species, such as cotton bollworm, pink bollworm, and tobacco cutworm. moreover, fenvalerate is also effective against a wide variety of flying or crawling insects, such as houseflies, cockroaches, and green rice leafhoppers. 16 refs
