protein enrichment of rice straw was attempted by subjecting it to fermentation with a strain of cellulomonas (cbs. 7) which was originally isolated from decomposing cotton debris. maximum cellulose utilisation (73. 2) was recorded with ammonium sulphate as nitrogen source supplemented with biotin, at ph 7. 5 within 72 h of fermentation. pretreatment of milled rice straw with a 2:1 mixture of naoh (5) and h//2o//2 (1) resulted in lignin reduction from 13 32 to 3. 52. treated straw yielded 189-195 mg of protein per 100 ml of medium in a period of 120 h of fermentation under shaker-grown condition.
