marine 3d seismic survey techniques have in fact separated into two types. the traditional way of conducting marine 3d surveys by traversing a very large number of closely spaced parallel lines is still popular. the newer method on the scene is known as exploration 3d surveying and is basically the same technique but with a much wider line spacing so that the quantity of data acquired in a given prospect is significantly reduced. exploration 3d is not a substitute for 3d surveying in field development or reservoir determinaton studies but an alternative to conventional 2d profiling since the costs are comparable. the key process which makes exploration 3d viable is a new technique of interpolation now being applied. designated 'the intelligent interpolator,' it relies on pattern recognition techniques, and interpolation distances may be increased many times depending on the severity of the geologic structure and the signal-to-noise ratio. 1 ref
