30-1100 nm thick films of al, au and pt were deposited on glass substrates and bombarded with 2 mev he**2** $plus$ ions or 10 kev electrons. scotch tape, cotton bud abrasion and scratch tests were employed to measure adhesion changes, as a function of dose, dose rate, film thickness, method of film deposition, aging and thermal annealing in air. the chemisorbed system of al on glass is found to 'stitch' (undergo adhesion enhancement) very easily using either ion or electron beam bombardment. in contrast, the physisorbed systems of au or pt on glass show no adhesion enhancement under he bombardment, but are 'stitched' with an electron beam. 24 refs
