the efficiency of a variable filling fluid coupling can be considered in two parts. firstly the losses due to slip and secondly the standing loss attributable to the peripheral windage, bearing frictional resistances and the energy required to circulate the oil through the fluid coupling and its cooler. expressed in terms of the maximum rating for a given size of coupling running at a specified input speed the standing loss at full output speed will account for around 2 in the case of the scoop control type coupling. for clutching duty applications, no speed variation is used but the variable filling fluid couplings allow longer acceleration time needed for these applications with limitations in starting torques some important applications are given
