several developments in recent years have increased the need to make profitability analyses for decisions on petroleum investment opportunities. some of these developments have also increased the hazards in using even time-tested investment indicators. these developments include major changes in the levels and variability of interest rates, inflation, costs, and prices. some topics discussed are the following: examples of investment under high interest rates; net profit; profit-to-investment ratio; the rate of return; and profitability analysis (high discount rates and investment decisions) . 7 refs
