a new spectrophotometric method for the determination of total gossypol content in cottonseeds and cottonseed meals has been developed. the method is based on the reaction of gossypol with 3-amino-1-propanol and its subsequent complexation with iron(iii) the green colored iron(iii)-bis-(aminopropanol)-gossypol complex has a characteristic absorption maximum at 620 nm. the colored system obeys beer's law in the concentration range of 4-80 ppm of gossypol the effects of several experimental variables on the determination of gossypol have been studied and the stoichiometric composition of the complex has been determined. the new method has been found to be simple, rapid, and precise and to yield results comparable with the standard aocs method. 27 refs
