chitin is a naturally occurring polysaccharide, the monomeric unit of which is n-acetyl d-glucosamine. this polysaccharide exists in three crystalline polymorphic forms, viz. , $alpha$ -, $beta$ -, and $gamma$ -chitins. the structure of chitin has been determined by various investigators using the x-ray diffraction technique recently, blackwell, minke, and gardner determined the structure of $alpha$ - and $beta$ -chitin by x-ray diffraction using the rigid-body least-square refinement method. in the present study the structure of $alpha$ -chitin as determined by the electron diffraction technique is reported. 8 refs
