the washing of cotton prior to processing has been shown to reduce lung dysfunction associated with byssinosis in mill workers the present study used thermal methods of analysis (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis), contact angle, a sink-float method, potassium content and chemiluminescence as methods objectively to differentiate washed and unwashed cottons from a variety of sources. all of these tests were found capable of discriminating washed from unwashed cotton. 22 refs
