this paper is concerned with technology of the flocking process which involves giving a surface a textile character by first coating the substrate with adhesive and then applying short, monofilament staple fibers (flock). by far the most commonly used fiber materials are polyamide, cotton and viscose. the so-called handle of the surface depends on the ratio of the fiber diameter to the fiber length. the narrower the fibers, the softer will be the surface. in electrostatic flocking, the fibers are applied in an electric field the rod-shaped flock accepts an electric charge at an electrode and flies in the direction of the field lines to the opposite pole, which is the substrate. this paper introduces a process in which a composite is produced form only two components, namely the substrate and the flock. in place of the adhesive, the fibers are anchored in the substrate by briefly dissolving the surface of the plastic. 6 refs
