scopoletin (7-hydroxy-6-methoxycoumarin) is a major extractable component of cotton plant parts. it exhibits a strong blue fluorescence peak when activated in the near uv region. further, histamine has been reported to be present in cotton plant parts. the results reported in this paper show that scopoletin is carried through the standard complexing procedure used to assay for histamine which includes measurements of fluorescing intensity at 440 nm therefore, it is likely that much of the apparent histamine reported to be present in cotton plant parts of cotton dusts is actually due to scopeletin. 13 refs
