gradual plugging of cotton fabric filter cloths during the fitration of model surries of kieselguhr, perlite, caco//3, and caco//3 flocculated by additions of paa was studied. the increase in the filter media resistance was correlated with the number of filtration cycles being done on a given filter cloth without its regeneration. a relation was derived and verified on the basis of experimental data enabling the loss of efficiency of a continuous filter in the nth working cycle to be calculated. out of a number of variables influencing the process of filter cloth plugging, the concentration of a solid phase in the slurry has the most pronounced effect, the pressure drop during filtration playing a less important role. considerable deviations from the expected course of the filter cloth plugging were observed in the cases of flocculated slurries, indicating that the optimum dose of the flocculating agent must be determined carefully. 6 refs
