in the reported experiments, cotton and polyester-cotton fabrics were laundered 20 times in hard water (360 ppm) at 85 $degree$ c in the presence of an anionic surfactant and 5 g/l of various binary and ternary builder mixtures. it was found that the binary mixture natpp-na//2so//4 behaved as if no na//2so//4 was present. the mixture citrex s5-na//2so//4 gave negligible insoluble salt build-up in all proportions. for natpp-sasil mixtures salt build-up was a linear function of the proportion of sasil. although insoluble salt build-up increases slightly with sasil content it is not progressive and the resulting incrustation appears to be less damaging than in other cases. ternary mixtures of natpp, na//2co//3 and sasil give low salt build-up as long as the natpp content remains higher than about 40. in natpp-na//2co//3 mixtures, half of the natpp could be replaced by sokalan cp 2 without increase in salt build-up. 3 refs
