in the reported experiments, indole-3 carboxaldehyde was isolated from aqueous extracts of cotton plant parts by hplc. it was identified by its mass spectrum which was identical to that of an authentic sample of indole-3 carboxaldehyde. a mechanism to account for the mass spectral fragmentation pattern is proposed. 7 refs
