the x-ray structure of the coo//8 unit in cobalt garnet, a new synthetic silicate of the composition co//3al//2si//3o//1//2, is presented. the unit can be taken as a deformed cube, but its central co**i**i is more regularly 8-coordinated than that in $left bracket$ co(no//3)//4 $right bracket$ **2** $minus$ studied formerly by bergman and cotton. the electronic spectrum and magnetic moment of cobalt garnet are discussed in comparison with those of two other silicates containing coo//4 units. 11 refs
