survey data are presented which reveal that the availability of quality natural southern hardwoods is increasing although still restricted. responses from fertilization, irrigation, and fertilization, pruning, and thinning are commonly obtained in improving tree growth and quality. hardwood plantations are being established at a rate of about 4000 hectares (ha) annually. the primary objective of the cottonwood, sycamore, sweetgum, green ash, and willow oak/water oak plantations is fiber production; the secondary objective is sawtimber. silvicultural practices applied to hardwood natural stands and plantations improve tree growth and form without adversely affecting wood properties. 23 refs
