data are presented which show that deposition of hydrophobic particulate soil on cotton fabric laundered 35 times and bleached by hypochlorite is proportional to the logarithm of the degree of polymerization. it follows that chemical wear decreases deposition this is attributed to the increase in the number of carboxyl end-groups when cellulose is oxidized, resulting in an increase in zeta-potential of the fibers. the effect is most clearly visible under conditions of high redeposition, i. e. with poor anionic surfactants at low surfactant concentrations and in the presence of electrolyte. mechanical wear always increases, deposition on cotton fabrics. 7 refs. in english
