the salt affected soils and saline ground waters usually contain lithium. the content of lithium increases with salinity soluble lithium (saturation extract) and extractable lithium (ammonium acetate) has been observed to be about 0. 5 and 2. 5 ppm, respectively, in highly saline soils. the tolerance to lithium varies from plant to plant. avocados, sour oranges, beans, sugarbeet and cabbages may tolerate lithium up to 5 ppm. the cotton, maize, wheat and barley may tolerate as high as 20 to 40 ppm lithium, in the irrigation water. it is suggested that standard of lithium in irrigation water may be considered as 5, 10 and 20 ppm for sensitive, semi-tolerant and tolerant crops respectively. 22 refs
