the paper discusses the development of offshore repair techniques and the philosophy involved in deciding upon a particular method of repair, considering the relative costs and complexity of the various operations involved. emphasis is placed upon underwater welded repairs, although mechanical systems are also considered. the various problems associated with welding underwater are discussed, these including diving aspects, welding processes, arc stability, and weld quality, considering the effects of weld metal quench rates, thermal input, and ambient gas in or around the arc. finally, the concept of on-site robotic welding is introduced as a future technique for underwater repair at great depth, or at any depth if hazardous conditions prevail and thus preclude the use of divers. 13 refs
