more than 500,000 hectares of plantation are being established annually in the southern united states, with 95 devoted to loblolly and slash pines. slash pine is recommended for use on the wet flats and savannahs of the lower coastal plain and in the zone from ocala to the georgia-florida border where loblolly pine is badly infected by fusiform rust. loblolly pine will generally perform best on the remaining upland sites except for the deep sands, where longleaf and sand pines are best suited. tree improvement programs have been instrumental in developing strains specifically adapted to problem sites. hardwood plantation culture has received impetus in recent years because of the depletion of quality timber and local shortages of the resource for fiber and energy. major efforts have been made to identify forest types and species best suited for plantation use; cottonwood, sycamore, sweetgum, willow oak, and green ash have shown promise. 11 refs
