the technological environment of the network 2000 concept has been analyzed to derive the requirements for a digital hardware-based switching system that will make maximum use of this environment. the structure of the itt 1240 exchange hardware $em dash$ part of itt system 12 $em dash$ is described to illustrate how it has been designed to provide a flexible, modular system that meets these requirements and has a wide application range. the key features are provided by custom lsi circuits and by making maximum use of commercially available microprocessors. 1 ref
