Linen is currently enjoying a revival in popularity for women's and men's clothing due to its elegance and comfort. It is also used in the home and for technical uses. it dyes well and is very hard-wearing. The production of linen is fairly small compared to the rest of the textile industry. It is cultivated in Belgium, France and Holland and processed in these counties and Germany to produce linen fibre. Italy is the biggest producer and consumer of linen yarn in Europe and also the biggest exporter. In western Europe linen is woven using modern machines (projectile or rapier) or shuttle looms depending on the end use of the fabric. Linen can be blended with many types of natural and synthetic fibres to produce particular effects and properties. It is an ecological fibre as it is a useful rotation crop, requires little fertilizer or chemical protection and is recyclable.
