How Textile Manufacturers Dealt with Sticky Cotton from the 1995 Crop.

Researchers conducted a survey of textile mills to determine the effects of sticky cotton on processing adjustments and costs. Several factors limited data analysis, including the inability of textile mills to retrace origins of processing costs, company policies prohibiting the release of cost information, and small sample size. Although the investigation could not generate cost estimates for processing sticky cotton, it did demonstrate that the added costs of processing sticky cotton increased as the level of stickiness increased. The presence of stickiness rather than the level of stickiness dicated the best strategies for processing. 10 refs.
