The Cotton Contamination Survey, conducted every two years by the International Textile Machinery Federation, reveals that the proportion of moderate and heavy cotton contamination increased from 14 percent in 1989 to 19 percent in 1996. The most contaminated cottons originated in India, Pakistan, and Turkey. The least contaminated cottons originated in Australia and Zimbabwe. The lowest occurrence of stickiness occurred in 1995, when only 20 percent of all cottons were affected. In 1997, 23 percent of all evaluations reported the presence of stickiness. Thirty-two percent of all cottons surveyed showed evidence of seed coat fragments, the first net improvements reported since 1991.
