An introduction to the cotton industry in Uzbekistan addresses common varieties, fiber classes and grades, fiber testing, assortment, and selection. Uzbekistan produces 1.2 million tons of cotton fiber annually. Beginning in 1993, cotton fiber classification was based on type, grade, and class. Each type is divided into Birinchi, Ikinchi, Uchinchi, Turtinchi, and Beschinchi grades. The class index, which indicates the amount of trash and defects in the fiber, comprises highest, good, middle, ordinary, and trashy. Tables describe the distribution of cotton fiber by types, grades, and classes for the 1996 crop year, and properties of the main cotton varieties grown the Uzbekistan.
