Researchers compared the fibrillated nature of the supermolecular structure of oriented polymers with the fibrillated fibrous structure of natural cellulose and protein materials. Results indicated that microfibrils are the basic structural elements and carriers of fibrous properties in oriented manmade fiber composed of flexible or rigid molecules. Researchers also studied the microfibrillar structure, its organization, and the properties of microfibrils, such as geometry, two phase structure, and anisotropy. The thermodynamic stability of the microfibrillar state and energy comparison of the formation of microfibrils of natural and manmade fibers are described. 48 refs.
