Bacterial blight, verticillium wilt, and seedling diseases are the major cotton diseases in Australia. Plants contract diseases when pathogens contact susceptible hosts in suitable environmental conditions. Infested crop debris is a primary source of cotton blight. Other avenues of pathogen introduction include infested seed, wind, water droplets, insects, animals, and farm machines. Symptoms develop when such environmental conditions as high humidity and temperatures occur. The soilbnorne fungus causing verticillium wilt is destructive and widely distributed. It reduces yields and affects lint quality. Fungi and bacteria combinations are responsible for seedling diseases. Such cultural practices as sowing at appropriate times and avoiding water saturated soils control seedling diseases. Permanent bed systems may become inadvertent hosts for cotton pathogens.
