Researchers introduced ionic groups to modified cellulosic fibers to yield stable suspensions in aqueous solvents. Heterogeneous chemical modifications were achieved to yield ionic fibers (-COO or -NR(3+)). Different average degrees of substitution were introduced to produce cationic fibers giving stable suspensions in water. The suspensions exhibited high viscosity and non-Newtonian behavior. Over a critical concentration, a yield stress appeared associated with a gel-like behavior. The rheological properties of the suspensions will be analyzed as a function of the concentration, degree of substitution, and composition of the solvent. The introduction of the ionic group allowed the stable suspension to be recoverable after drying. Its rheological properties remained regardless of temperature, which is advantageous compared with water soluble polymers. Abstract.
