Because rayon is manufactured from cellulose, which is an abundant resource, and can be manufactured with a range of mechanical properties, it remains competitive with such noncellulosic manmade fibers as nylon, polyester, and acrylic. Rayon manufacture involves the viscose process, which includes steeping, shredding, ageing, xanthation, dissolution, filtration, blending, ripening, and spinning. The use of modifiers allows for viscose fiber variations, including high performance crimped fibers, inflated fibers, superabsorbent fibers, and flame retardant fibers. The discussion covers advances in rayon process technology, the incorporation of carbon in viscose fibers, and alternatives to the viscose process. 22 refs.
