An experiment investigating the effect of conventional wet processes on shade changes in naturally colored cotton subjected Coyote, Buffalo, and Green naturally pigmented cotton yarns to caustic and enzymatic scouring, solvent extraction, mercerization, and cellulase enzyme treatments and evaluated changes in color shade using the CIEL *a*b* color system. Caustic treatments exerted the greatest impact on fiber hue. After treating Coyote and Buffalo plain weave fabrics with metal salt solutions, a substantial color shirt toward darker browns and gray browns occurred with solutions containing iron(II) ions. Other cations were less effective. The color shift occurred after very short treatment times. 3 refs.
