An introduction to additional cotton fiber quality measurements that may come into general use in the near future addresses short fiber content, color grade, trash grade, nep content, stickiness, fiber elongation, and fiber maturity. Researchers are evaluating recently developed algorithms that use the characteristics of the length fibrogram to predict short fiber content. The constant disagreement between classer and instrument color grades necessitates the use of a color grade computed from color instrumentation for marketing and selecting bales for mill mix laydowns. Data from the 1990s indicate that trash levels are increasing in the United State cotton crop. Although the technology exists to measure the above listed properties, it remains to be proved whether they add to processing efficiency and cotton value.
