Due to the arrangement of the cellulose macromolecules in the fiber wall, flax is more difficult to spin than cotton. In addition, the lack of accepted quality standards is a problem when manufacturers purchase flax. The processes used to spin flax include the cotton spinning process with cottonized short staple scutched and hackled tow and long staple ring spinning with long fiber hackled flax. Sachsische Baumwollspinnerei GmbH, in conjunction with flax supplier Schurer GmbH, studied optimal fiber lengths and opening processes; such fiber properties as cleanliness, fineness, color, strength, moisture, and fragments; fiber aftertreatments; and simultaneous dyeing treatments. The results of the study led to the develop-ment of a soft linen fiber suitable for cotton spinning mills.
