Unique properties of cotton fiber include its absence of melting and glass transition temperatures, its ability to decompose in the presence of microorganisms, and its water vapor and water absorption properties. A mature cotton fiber structure consists of six parts: the cuticle, which is an outer waxy layer containing pectins and proteinaceous materials that provide a water resistant coating; the primary wall, with a network of fine fibrils and a well organized system of continuous very fine capillaries that enhance wipe dry performance; the winding layer, an open netting pattern of fibrils aligned at 40-70 degree angles to the fiber axis; the secondary wall, with concentric layers of cellulose that constitute the main portion of the cotton fiber; the lumen wall, which separates the lumen from the secondary wall and is more resistant to certain reagents; and the lumen, the hollow canal that runs the length of the fiber. 7 refs.
