Land used for food production has become increasingly contaminated with heavy metals from industrial pollution, representing a risk not only to crops but to groundwater as well. One strategy used for soil remediation is growing nonfood crops on these lands, particularly plants that accumulate the heavy metals in their structure. Flax has strong potential in this application, but it is necessary to identify geneotypes that accumulate maximum quantities of the heavy metals without damage to the plant during growth. Experiments demonstrated significant toxicity of a range of heavy metals on plant growth, resulting in death for most of the plants. These results indicate the need to screen flax gene banks for tolerance to heavy metals, which could lead to selective breeding for this trait.
