A review of the use of hemp and flax for building insulation focuses on the growing market for biogenic materials in environmentally safe construction. The review compares relevant physical properties of established biogenic materials with those of such conventional materials as glass wool and polystyrol. Materials based on flax yield the only biogenic materials that compare directly with glass wool relative to thermal conductivity and other physical properties. Measurements demonstrate the thermal conductivity of a wide range of fiber flax, linseed, and hemp fiber mats relative to mat density. Despite the range of raw materials and extraction technologies, all samples respond the same to an increase in mat density. Only fine retted flax and flax tow fiber, however, reduce thermal conductivity to the glass wool standard. With the coarser fibers of linseed and hemp, high mat densities are requisite to achieve this standard. 6 refs.
