An overview of lyocell fibers examines their extrusion, fibrillation, applications, blends, dyeing, finishing, and recent lyocell related activities at Courtaulds, Lenzing, and Akzo Nobel. The preparation of lyocell entails dissolving wood pulp in amine oxide, which is not toxic and is eventually purified and recycled. Compared with other cellulosic fibers, lyocell fibers have greater wet and dry strengths and modulus and produce stronger yarns and fabrics with less shrinkage than that of viscose fabrics. Many of the most important properties of lyocell stem from its ability to fibrillate. Fibrillation can increase the strength, integrity, opacity, and absorbency of yarns, fabrics, and papers. Although the primary application of standard 1.5 denier lyocell fibers has been woven fabrics for women's apparel, lyocell is also used in technical and industrial textiles. 11 refs.
