Major advances in cotton biotechnology are expected to be complemented by agricultural improvements (longer and stronger fibers) in the 21st century. Improvements in these characteristics will make cotton fibers easier to process. Better insect control inherent in the plant will result in better yields. New technologies, especially in dyeing and finishing, will be developed to confer new properties and characteristics to cotton fibers, yarns, and fabrics. Different cotton fibers are expected to be developed, such as fibers that dry faster. advances in functional finishes will also occur. Cotton processing will become more environmentally friendly, especially in dyeing. Reduction in the use of water for processing will also be important. Developments in cotton spinning will result in faster production rates. Genetic engineering, particularly the use of genes from other organisms, will play a critical role in the evolution of cotton fibers.
