Nagase and Co is to market an enzyme that helps produce softer cotton products and reduces costs. The enzyme is used instead of conventional caustic soda for the de-gumming of cotton. Called proctopectinase, it decomposes pectin and is secreted by a microbe belonging to the Bacillus genus, it was discovered by Professor Takuo Sakai of Kinki University before Nagase's Kyoto based subsidiary developed it commercially.
