Chitin is a natural polysaccharide with excellent bioactive properties, it is insoluble in common solvents due to its extensive hydrogen bonding and its highly crystalline structure. It is these properties that restrict many practical applications of chitin. Dibutyrylchitin (DBCH) is a product of chitin-O-butyrylation obtained in the presence of perchloric acid, can easily be reproduced. It is soluble in popular organic solvents and forms films and fibres using common methods of preparation. The use of easily soluble DBCH for preparation of fibres, then the conversion of DBCH into chitin again gives the possibility to obtain a wide assortment of chitin materials for medical applications.
