Hollow fiber membranes account for approximately one-quarter of the membrane filter market, which is expected to reach $4.4 billion by 2000. The use of hollow fiber membranes is increasing rapidly due to their large filtration area and declining production costs as more online. Hollow fiber membranes typically consist of cellulose acetate, polysulfone, polyethersulfone, nylon, polypropylene, acrylic, or polyvinyl pyrrolidone polymers; magnesium sulfate, polyethylene glycol, or sodium chloride pore formers; and water, nitrogen, or dilute solvent as lumen formers. Most of the fibers are low speed solution extruded. Efficient production lines must accommodate multiple fiber continuous processes at speeds of up to 300 feet per minute, require one or fewer workers per line, feature automatic monitoring of all critical process variables with feedback control for out-of-limit responses, and reduce energy and water costs.
