Manmade fiber manufacturers are applying their control of fiber tertiary structures to the development of novel biotechnological materials. Applications of manmade fibers in medicine and healthcare include sutures, surgical tape, tissue adhesives, vascular implants, artificial skin, soft tissue implants, joint replacements, artificial bones, artificial kidneys, artificial lungs, artificial livers, and the diagnosis and treatment of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The Asahi chemical Industry Company developed a porous hollow fiber membrane, made from regenerated cellulose fiber from cuprammonium solutions of cotton linters, to filter and isolate the AIDS and hepatitis B viruses in blood.
