Comparisons between microwave heated and conventionally steam heated bales of unprocessed wool are made. It was found that compared to steam heating, microwave warming gives more homogeneous results and requires significantly less energy. Microwave tri-packs are easier to process through the opening section of the scouring process, generating much improvement in fibre length and colour of the final product, while reducing overall product waste. Bale softness is extended over conventional steam heating allowing tri-packs to be softened up to two weeks prior to processing while still retaining significant improvements in length, colour and productivity.
