It was shown that NIR (near-infrared) spectroscopy is suitable for qualitative fibre recognition and quantitative fibre analysis. However, in qualitative analyses, the derivative and not the remission spectra should be used to calibrate the appropriate system, since shine, fabric construction and colour of the textile affect the remission spectra and cause parallel displacements. In addition, the wavelengths, at which changes in spectrum intensity occur due to variations in the humidity of the fibres, must be excluded. This particularly true of hydrophilic fibres in which even small differences in air moisture cause significant variations in the remission values. NIR spectroscopy permits quantitative analyses of fibre blends which correspond well to values produced by wet chemical fibre analysis.
