The fiber characteristics and spinning performance of seven standard varieties of Indian cottons were examined. A Baer sorter calculated mean fiber lengths. A digital fibrograph determined the 2.5 percent span lengths and uniformity ratios. Fiber fineness was determined both gravimetrically and by micronaire. The fiber maturity was graded by examining fibers placed in caustic soda. A Pressley strength stelometer obtained bundle-strength values. A Shirley analyzer tested samples for trash content, including cage loss. Sample sizes weighing 4.5 kilograms were processed. Two counts of yarn were spun and conditioned before each testing.
