A review of the patent literature reveals that concepts of bonding thermoplastic fibrous structures by means of ultrasonic energy first emerged around 1966. By the early 1970's, the Pinsonic Process, developed by Hunter Machine Company, became available for the continuous manufacture of quilted materials. A machine of the Pinsonic type can, in principle, also be used for such operations as embossing, laminating, and bonding of fibrous structures. At present, a range of other commercial equipment is used in the textile, plastics and related industries for trimming, slitting, transverse cutting, sealing, seaming, button-holing, attaching fasteners, and product forming.
