India, the largest cotton-growing country in the world, has increased its production dramatically over the past 30 years due to the production of hybrid cottons, the use of irrigation, and improved pest control. India is one of eight countries to produce long staple cotton and, with its quality hybride production, has raised cotton production levels to meet consumption levels. Cotton prices in India have stabilized since the country's production boom. The growth in the cotton industry fueled investments in Indian textiles. India's cotton would be more competitive on the international market if the country modernized its ginning and spinning mills.
