Dyeing investigations with hardness sensitive dyestuffs were carried-out on cotton in hard water in which the hardness influence of the addition of a new, natural analogue and readily biologically degradable polymer, polyasparaginic acid was tried as a phosphonate substitute. Similar results were obtained with respect to dyestuff properties for direct, reactive and vat dyes in hard water as with soft water in levelness and depth of shade. A new, large pore zeolithe (Wessalith XD) was also successfully tested as a hardness complexer for batch dyeing.
